Based on the news and hectic nature of the world this week, I figured that this would be a great time to answer this frequently asked question about alternative therapies! Everyone could use a little yoga right now, right? :)
Alternative Medicine or therapies refer to basically any treatment outside of standard western medicine! This is a pretty broad term and is getting even broader as you can imagine. Alternative therapies are becoming more and more popular these days and are being sought out by many individuals for chronic pain, anxiety, and other health management issues. These varying therapies are now even classified for reference by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
Some of the areas include: Reiki, hypnosis, acupuncture, aromatherapy, biofeedback, homeopathy, acupressure, meditation, Balneotherapy, ayurvedic medicine, and more....
There are so many options out there so how do you choose? Or should you explore any?
A great deal of this is up to you! Have you used alternative therapies in the past? Do you have friends who feel that certain therapies have been helpful? Has a healthcare provider suggested alternative therapies to you? Has a healthcare provider expressed concern over any specific alternative therapies based on your medical needs or care regimes?
You can always speak with a Care Advisor or Geriatric Care Manager to gather more information before moving forward. They can provide a detailed list of areas worth exploring and even guidance regarding reputable providers. Of course before beginning any new health regime consult your physician(s) first!
